What Value Does WP Ghost Add to My WordPress Security Stack?

WP Ghost adds hack prevention: it hides the WordPress paths, plugin names and version details that bots use to pick a target. Most security tools detect attacks or clean up after them; WP Ghost works on the step before, when bots scan for WordPress.

The gap in most security stacks

A typical WordPress security setup includes a firewall (a security plugin’s or your host’s), malware scanning, login protection and regular backups. These layers detect threats when they arrive, block known attack patterns and help you recover when something gets through. They don’t stop bots from discovering which plugins, themes and WordPress version you run.

That discovery step, called reconnaissance, is where automated attacks start. A bot requests /wp-login.php, /wp-admin, /wp-content/plugins/ and /xmlrpc.php. When it finds them, it knows the site runs WordPress and checks vulnerability databases for your plugins and themes. If the bot finds nothing it recognizes, it has nothing to match.

WP Ghost fills that gap by making your site invisible to the reconnaissance step. It changes all default paths, removes CMS fingerprints from the page source, and blocks access to common WordPress files. Bots scanning for standard WordPress structure get 404 errors and move on.

What WP Ghost adds to your existing stack

No matter what security tools you already use, WP Ghost adds these layers that the others typically do not provide.

Attack surface reduction. WP Ghost changes the WordPress paths for the admin, login, plugins (with each plugin’s name hidden), themes, uploads, wp-includes, the REST API and author pages. With the paths and names hidden, scanners and theme detectors have far less to identify.

Protection between disclosure and patch. When a plugin vulnerability is published, attackers scan for sites running that plugin by requesting its known path. If WP Ghost has changed your plugin paths and hidden the plugin names, that scan doesn’t find it, even before you update.

Server-level firewall. The 2026 Ghost Firewall (with 7G and 8G as fallbacks) blocks SQL injection, XSS, file inclusion and directory traversal patterns before WordPress loads. It works alongside your host’s WAF or Cloudflare at the edge.

Passkey 2FA. Along with authenticator-app and email codes, WP Ghost supports passkeys (Face ID, Touch ID, Windows Hello and hardware security keys), which can’t be phished the way a typed code can.

Security headers. Strict-Transport-Security, Content-Security-Policy, X-Frame-Options and X-Content-Type-Options tell browsers to refuse framing, content sniffing and unsafe scripts. WordPress sends X-Frame-Options only on the login and admin pages and doesn’t add most of these headers to your front-end pages.

Works with your existing tools

WP Ghost works next to other security tools. Let WP Ghost handle path security and the features only it has, and let the other tool handle malware scanning, file integrity monitoring or activity auditing. Switch each overlapping feature on in one plugin only. See the compatible plugins list for configuration notes.

Frequently asked questions

Does WP Ghost replace my existing security plugin?

It can. WP Ghost Free covers path security, the firewall, brute force protection, 2FA and security headers, which is enough prevention for most sites. If you also need malware scanning, file integrity monitoring or post-hack cleanup, keep a scanner and let WP Ghost handle prevention.

Does WP Ghost protect me if I have outdated plugins?

WP Ghost makes it significantly harder for bots to find and exploit outdated plugins because the plugin paths and names are hidden. A bot scanning for /wp-content/plugins/vulnerable-plugin/ gets a 404 instead of a confirmation. This protects you during the critical window between vulnerability disclosure and patch release. However, updating your plugins is always recommended. Path security adds a strong layer but should not be treated as a reason to skip updates.

Will adding WP Ghost slow down my site?

No. WP Ghost uses lightweight rewrite rules and server-level filtering. It does not run file scans or database checks on every page load. By blocking bot traffic before it reaches WordPress, WP Ghost can actually reduce your server load.

Does WP Ghost modify WordPress core files?

No. WP Ghost uses rewrite rules and WordPress filters. No core files are modified. This means it integrates cleanly with any existing security stack without causing file integrity alerts.
